INTERCHANGEABILITY FORMULARY The
Manitoba Drug Benefits and Interchangeability Formulary lists drugs that are
approved as eligible benefits under Pharmacare. The website provides .pdf files for the
Interchangeability Formulary, Specified Drugs Regulation, Amendments to the
Formulary, and Part 3: Exception Drug Status. CANADIAN ADVERSE REACTION
NEWSLETTER The
Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter is a reputable source of adverse
reaction information from Health Canada and is published quarterly, in January,
April, July and October of each year. This publication alerts health
professionals to potential signals detected through the review of case
reports submitted to Health Canada. With free subscription, the newsletter
can be sent directly to your email account. Reporting of adverse reactions
can also be done at this website. HEALTH CANADA: DRUG PRODUCT
DATABASE This
Health Canada page contains product-specific information for both active and
discontinued drugs in Canada. DRUG INFO RESOURCES: GUIDE
FOR PHARMACISTS DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY A very
comprehensive free website that provides links to pharmacy related topics in
over 60 categories including: adverse drug reactions, substance abuse,
pharmacoepidemiology, PDA usage and much more. There is also an Internet Tutorial for Pharmacists section
to assist pharmacists in becoming familiar with using the Internet to locate
and evaluate drug information. The website provides different case scenarios
while linking to useful websites for drug information. e-CPS and e-THERAPEUTICS Both e-CPS
and e-Therapeutics are online drug resources for health care professionals
produced by the Canadian Pharmacists Association. The e-CPS is similar
to the print version, but updated biweekly and contains new sections such as
a "product identification tool" and printable handouts for patients.
e-Therapeutics is a new, regularly updated product that combines an online
version of the book "Therapeutic Choices", e-CPS, Lexi-Comp's
Lexi-Interact and more. The HEART.ORG (US) The
Heart.org is a comprehensive online resource for healthcare professionals on
general cardiology and all things related to the heart. It is a
free-with-online-registration website that is produced by WebMD. The site is updated daily. Canadian
Pharmacist’s Letter is a monthly print/online publication that provides
unbiased evidence and advice for the pharmacist on new developments in drug
therapy. The website includes current and past issues of the Letter, patient
handouts, useful charts, continuing education programs and information on new
drugs in both the US and Canada (American website available through a link on
the website). All materials require paid subscription to access. Included in
the subscription is the option of Palm or Pocket PC versions of the
publication with web-like searchability. PrISM is a
non-profit, independent pilot project set up by the Manitoba Pharmaceutical
Association (MPhA) and Manitoba Health. Their mandate is to provide
evidence-based education in optimal drug utilization. For pharmacists, they
produce the “Spectrum Newsletter”, which goes to each practitioner in
Manitoba through the MPhA mailings. Copies of all the Spectrum newsletters
are available on this website. For physicians, the "Spectrum MD"
provides concise, evidence-based, information that has been reviewed or
co-authored by Manitoba physicians. MD CONSULT (US) MD Consult
is a service of Elsevier, a healthcare and medical science publisher, and
operates a family of electronic information resources that aim to meet the clinical
content needs of physicians and other healthcare professionals. There are
various editions of the publication that specialize in various areas of
general medicine. PDA references are also available. All services require a
paid subscription; a 30-day trial is available. Motherisk
is an online health resource for pregnant women and healthcare professionals
treating mothers. It is a project of The Hospital for Sick Children in
Toronto, Canada and is affiliated with The University of Toronto. The site
provides free information regarding drugs in pregnancy and other
pregnancy-related health issues. RxFiles is
a program that is funded by the Saskatchewan Health Region which aims to
provide pharmacists and physicians with a source of reference to optimize
drug therapy. A team of pharmacists compile RxFiles Drug Comparison Charts,
which can be printed online, purchased as a booklet or downloaded for PDA
use. The site also includes periodic newsletters about pertinent drug
therapies. MEDICAL
LITERATURE DATABASES AMERICAN COLLEGE OF
PHYSICIANS JOURNAL CLUB The ACP
Journal Club collects abstracts from several other primary care journals and
publishes them in a bi-monthly print edition. The general purpose of the ACP
Journal Club is to select from the biomedical literature articles that report
original studies and systematic reviews that warrant immediate attention by
physicians attempting to keep pace with important advances in internal
medicine. A subscription is required to access all the articles. ALLIED JOURNAL CLUB (US) A
free-with-online-registration medical literature review service, the Allied
Journal Club allows users to sign up for e-updates to user-selected journals.
The website also allows users to search for various health topics which are
linked to the articles at other websites. The website is aimed at all
healthcare professionals and includes journals such as: Annals of
Pharmacotherapy, JAMA, British Medical Journal, New England Journal of
Medicine etc. A
free-with-online-registration website that provides learning resources for
all healthcare professionals. More than 40 MEDLINE-indexed journals are
available and can be searched by the various health topics along with daily
health news. PubMed, a
service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 15 million
citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from
MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many
sites providing full text articles and other related resources. PDA RESOURCES This site
contains both free and paid-subscription software for Palm Pilots and Pocket
PCs. It also has an online drug reference site – the free version does not
include their neat pill identifier, med calculator, alternative medicine
monographs and patient education information, among other things, but still
contains useful monograph information. One of the
most well-known and comprehensive drug references available for PDAs. The
site has all its PDA software for sale, in addition to other education
accessories such as wall charts, flip charts and patient booklets. INSTITUTE FOR SAFE MEDICATION PRACTICES CANADA
(US site
also available) The Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada is an independent
national non-profit agency committed to the advancement of medication safety
in all healthcare settings. ISMP Canada works collaboratively with the
healthcare community, regulatory agencies and policy makers, provincial,
national and international patient safety organizations, the pharmaceutical
industry and the public to promote safe medication practices. ISMP Canada
prints bi-monthly Safety Bulletins and Medication Safety Alerts that can be
viewed for free online. Bi-weekly newsletters are available with subscription.
The site also includes services and tools to help address and prevent
medication errors. Report actual and potential
medication errors to ISMP Canada via the web at https://www.ismp-canada.org/err_report.htm
or by calling 1-866-54-ISMPC. ISMP Canada guarantees confidentiality of
information received and respects the reporter’s wishes as to the level of
detail included in publications. INSTITUTE FOR HEALTHCARE IMPROVEMENT (US) The
Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is a not-for-profit organization
that was founded in 1991 and is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This
website includes descriptions of the many programs IHI is involved with,
message boards and a detailed “tools” resource section. CANADIAN PATIENT SAFETY
INSTITUTE The
Canadian Patient Safety Institute is an independent not-for-profit
corporation that functions at arm's length from governments, system
stakeholders and regulatory bodies. CPSI performs a coordinating and
leadership role across sectors and systems, promotes effective strategies and
leading practices to improve patient safety, and raises awareness with
stakeholders, patients and the general public about patient safety. The
website provides news and resources about patient safety initiatives in
Canada. MANITOBA INSTITUTE FOR PATIENT SAFETY The Manitoba Institute
for Patient Safety (MIPS) was created in 2004 by the provincial government. The
Institute promotes, coordinates and facilitates activities that have a
positive impact on patient safety throughout Manitoba while enhancing the
quality of health care for Manitobans. The website provides information about
Manitoba patient safety initiatives, relevant news releases and information
about the organization. PARTNERS SEEKING SOLUTIONS
WITH SENIORS Partners Seeking Solutions with Seniors (PSSS) a coalition of Manitoba
stakeholders including representatives from a range of service providers and
interests – seniors, senior-serving organizations, health care, addiction
services, pharmacy, self help groups, government, and universities.
This website provides resources for preventing substance abuse with seniors
and for creating awareness of abuse issues among seniors. SENIOR HEALTH WEEK (US) Senior
Health Week is an online source of reports with the latest news on
prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting
seniors. The site is updated weekly and is produced by the staff of
Medical Week, a publisher of online consumer-health newsletters. ONLINE PHARMACY
JOURNALS ANNALS OF PHARMACOTHERAPY (US) The Annals
is an independent, peer-reviewed monthly medical journal that advances the
safe, effective, and economical use of medications in patients. Article categories
include: Original Research, Comprehensive Reviews, Case Reports Editorials.
All articles require subscription for viewing. A sample journal can be found here. The
Canadian Pharmacists Journal is the bi-monthly journal of the Canadian
Pharmacists Association. It publishes peer reviewed, clinical and research
articles of interest to Canadian pharmacists. Select articles are available
for free; no web registration is required. CANADIAN JOURNAL OF HOSPITAL
PHARMACISTS The Canadian
Journal of Hospital Pharmacy is the official publication of the Canadian
Society of Hospital Pharmacists. It is a bi-monthly, refereed, scientific
journal that publishes original research, clinical reviews, case reports, and
topical discussions on pharmacy practice that are of interest and value to
health care practitioners in institutional practice. Abstracts are available
for free. All articles require subscription. Subscription information can be
found here. CANADIAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY The
Canadian Journal of Clinical Pharmacology is a peer-reviewed scientific
journal specializing in Therapeutics. All articles are available absolutely
free online. ONLINE MEDICINE JOURNALS ANNALS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE (US) The Annals
of Internal Medicine is the monthly journal of the American College of
Physicians. It was the first publication to adopt the structured abstract
format, and is renowned for its clear, accurate, and rigorous analysis of
vitally important topics. Subscribers have free access to all articles. All
articles 6 months or older are available for free download; no web
registration is required. Articles can be downloaded onto PDA’s with a
special “Annals.org Reader” software available free with subscription to the journal. The
British Medical Journal is a weekly journal that aims to publish rigorous,
accessible and entertaining material that will help doctors and medical
students in their daily practice, lifelong learning and career development.
In addition, it seeks to be at the forefront of the international debate on
health. They publish original scientific studies, reviews and educational
articles, and papers commenting on the clinical, scientific, social,
political, and economic factors affecting health. All original research
articles are available free online; all other articles require subscription. CANADIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION JOURNAL The
Canadian Medical Association Journal is a general medical journal publishing
original research and review articles, commentaries and editorials, practice
updates, an arts and ideas section and health news. New articles are uploaded
every second Monday. All articles are available absolutely free online. JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION The
Journal of the American Medical Association is an international peer-reviewed
general medical journal published 48 times per year and is one of the most
widely circulated medical journals in the world. Articles 6 months or older
are available with free web-registration (called: Register as Guest).
Subscriptions are required for all other articles. NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE (US) The New
England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) is a weekly general medical journal that
publishes new medical research findings, review articles, and editorial
opinions on a wide variety of topics of importance to biomedical science and
clinical practice. Subscribers have free access to all NEJM articles. With
free online registration users can view all NEJM articles that are 6 months
